The church doesn’t have a mission... God’s mission has a church. And when a church is healthy, God’s mission to see all people and places changed by Christ will happen in such a way that we will look back and say one thing… Only God Only God

Connecting

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Why would you want that ability?

What do you really enjoy doing? What have you been told you are really good at? Do you think there is a connection between what you enjoy doing and what you are good at?

Looking Into The Bible

From the scriptures mentioned in the video, was there one that surprised you or made you think?

Read Psalm 139.13-16 as a group. Which group do you find yourself in more often? Praising God for making you so wonderfully complex? Or asking God to give you gifts you see in others? Does understanding that God created you uniquely for His purpose help move you to the “praising God for making you wonderful and unique” side?

What is a spiritual gift? Where do these gifts come from? Check out 1 Corinthians 12.11 and Ephesians 4.11-16 for more on Spiritual Gifts. (We will dive into these more in the coming weeks)

In Ephesians 4, why do you think Paul talks about “oneness” and “unity” before he mentions individual gifts?

According to Romans 12.3-8 what brings us together? What sets us apart? What are we supposed to do with our gifts?

Applying It To Our Lives

Do you know what your Spiritual Gifts are? Have these been confirmed by other people? Have you ever taken a Spiritual Gift test?

Spend 5 minutes to take the free online Spiritual Gifts test at giftstest.com. Make note of your top 5 Spiritual Gifts – we will be looking into these in the coming weeks.

We have each been given gifts by God for a reason. Help others in your group understand how they might use their gifts for God’s kingdom (remembering Romans 12.10 to “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other”).

CONNECTING

Every family has a culture of gift giving; some families give one big gift on holidays or birthdays, some give many smaller gifts, some share “experience” gifts (vacation, entertainment, etc.), and some families give random gifts throughout the year. Talk about how your family gave gifts, and how you may have added or changed to those traditions as an adult.

What is the best gift you have ever given someone? What is the best gift you have ever received? Why were these meaningful to you?

LOOKING INTO THE BIBLE

As we read about Spiritual Gifts and the different parts of the body in 1 Corinthians 12, what new insight into this passage did you gain today?

In 1 Corinthians 12.23-26, Paul reminds us that every part of the body matters to the whole. How are we to treat the parts of the body that seem weaker or less honorable?

No person has the ability to love a whole community, but the body of Christ does. Romans 12.3-9 reminds us we all have personal responsibility to help others use their Spiritual Gifts for the good of the body. How can you use your gifts, time, and resources to build up the Spiritual Gifts of others?

APPLYING IT TO OUR LIVES

Sometimes the people we think are the weakest or least valuable are the most valuable. Have you overlooked or undervalued someone in your life that has value in the Kingdom? What can you do to value them this week?

In our country, we value individualism, but in Jesus’ time, the people believed whatever was true for the King was true for the body. Members of the community would take on the characteristics of the King. Rather than spending time debating the character of our leaders and “picking a team”, how different would your life be if you spent time taking on the characteristics of Jesus? How different would our country and world look with this view?

 CONNECTING

As we look through the list of shaping gifts and have taken the spiritual gifts assessment, are there any people in your group who had one of these gifts in their top 5? Take some time to share with one another about these gifts and how they can be used in shaping other believers and the church.

 LOOKING INTO THE BIBLE

When we read through Romans 12 we see that Paul places emphasis on unity and humility among believers (v3-4). Why do you think he includes this warning?

APPLYING IT TO OUR LIVES

Our spiritual gifts will never be based on our own achievements. They are graciously given to us by God to build up His body, the church, and to accomplish His mission on earth. Paul warns us of how we can take what is meant to be unifying and turn it into something divisive. What are some ways that we can guard against “thinking that we are better than we really are”?

Spend some time in prayer with one another asking that God use our gifts to build up rather than pull apart.

LOOKING INTO THE BIBLE

Read 1 Peter 4.10-11. Are you fully utilizing the gifts God has given you “with all the strength and energy that God supplies”? Do you go through your day looking for ways to use the gifts God has given you? Are you intentional in using your gifts?

APPLYING IT TO OUR LIVES

Spiritual gifts must be developed so they can be used well. Do you have a mentor, coach or friend who has helped you realize your gifts? How have they helped you develop your gifts? Who can you mentor or inspire to use their gifts more fully?

Connecting

What is the most exotic place you have ever traveled to? Have you ever traveled to a country where you didn’t understand the language? What tools did you use to communicate? (interpreters, crazy hand signals, or ?)

Have you ever experienced a Sign Gift? Share the story with your group.

Looking into the Bible

The Sign Gifts are outlined in 1 Corinthians 12.1-11. From your spiritual gift test (spiritualgifts.com), do you have any of these Sign Gifts? Do you know someone who does? Share a brief story about one experience.

Everyone has some gifts; are you using yours well? Read 1 Peter 4.10-11 to help you understand how we are to use our gifts. Who is getting the glory? (hint: read Matthew 5.16) Is the world seeing Jesus when you use your gifts?

Applying It To Our Lives

Remembering that using any spiritual gift should be marked by deep humility (used for building up the body, not for notoriety) and maturity (development and practice, not flippant or careless), have you seen others use these gifts well? Have you seen others abuse their gifts? Where can we find guidelines for using our gifts?

Do you have any resources or books that have helped you understand Sign Gifts better? Share these with your group.
